Aylesbury Grammar School recently welcomed back James Waterhouse (Paterson '04), a BBC foreign correspondent in Ukraine, as part of our Inspirational Speakers Programme. James delivered a compelling talk to sixth form students, sharing his unconventional journey into journalism and the versatility required in his field.

James emphasised the importance of being adaptable, recounting the progression from his beginnings as a professional rugby player to reporting and covering international conflicts. He also discussed coping mechanisms for managing stress in hostile environments, offering valuable lessons on resilience and mental well-being that resonated with our students.

Highlighting the value of the BBC and the principle of impartiality, James underscored the importance of neutrality in journalism. His commitment to unbiased reporting served as a crucial reminder of the ethical responsibilities in the field.

The session concluded with a lengthy Q&A, where students were deeply engaged with James's stories and insights. His candid responses and the depth of his experiences provided a unique perspective, both on the geopolitical current affairs that he reports on but also in regard to his life lessons and career advice.

James's talk was not only inspiring but also a testament to the power of perseverance, and we are incredibly grateful that James has given up some of his valuable time back in the UK to return and support this important initiative.
