We were sad to hear of the passing of George Butcher at home on 21st October 2024, aged 97. He was a much-loved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He taught English at Aylesbury Grammar School in the 60's and 70's and the Ayleburian magazine of 1974 said the following:
Mr.G.L.Butcher came to us from Bristol, and for fifteen years gave devoted service to the school. Boys who have studied English, especially in the Sixth Form, must be very aware of how much they owe to him. As a Tutor he was a sympathetic and ready listener, and a common-sense advisor. Many boys—and girls—who have taken part in the school plays will remember him with affection. We wish him the success he deserves, and which he will surely find as Extra-Mural Tutor at the College of Further Education.
His friend and colleague, Alan Crease remembered: "He used a reel-reel tape recorder in the days ( 1968, I'd say ) when that was technical novelty. We were in the larger classroom in the main corridor that is now an office. The room did not have wall sockets, so George had to clamber onto his desk, unscrew a light bulb and connect his tape recorder that way.
Happy memories"
Alan also provided the above photo from the 50th anniversary visit back in 2015.
