A huge thank you to Old Aylesburian Dr Daniel Fazakerley (Denson '02) for arranging an unforgettable day of science and discovery at the Institute of Metabolic Science, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
Twelve lucky Year 12 students, six from AGS and six from AHS, were given the rare opportunity to step into real working labs and explore world-leading research into metabolic health and diabetes.
From preparing cell cultures and conducting protein assays in the Fazakerley Lab, to studying how maternal obesity affects brain development in the Dearden Lab, students got hands-on experience and deep insights into the science behind conditions like type 2 diabetes and obesity.
One standout takeaway? Obesity is just as heritable as height, a powerful insight from a day packed with learning.
The afternoon also included a Q&A with current undergrad and postgrad students, offering a valuable glimpse into life at university and careers in medical research.
We are incredibly grateful to Dr Fazakerley, Dr Dearden, and the entire team, including Dr Dilip, Ellie, Anna, Meghna, and Alex, for their generosity, time, and passion. Both students and staff were truly captivated. What an amazing opportunity – thank you again, Daniel, for making it happen!
