We are saddened to hear of the passing of Colin Roberts, former Maths teacher at Aylesbury Grammar School from 1979 to 2006. He also led sessions for sixth formers with an interest in philosophy, which he had lectured in at UEA before becoming a teacher. He was known throughout the school for his thoughtful and engaging house assemblies, which he was regularly poached from Ridley to deliver for other houses.
In the later years of his career, Colin found most of his professional satisfaction working for the NAS/UWT union as county negotiating secretary, pushing for the interests of teachers across Bucks. His proudest moment was a long-fought victory against Bucks County Council over coach park supervision duties: paid overseers were eventually appointed, to the great relief of teachers at AGS, AHS and the Grange who were spared this obligation.
The late Mr Hancock wrote of Colin in his Leavers Report in 2006-
"His students have benefited from the ease with which Mr.Roberts saw through the essential nature of mathematical thought. His lessons were always enlivened by his sense of humour and personal style. He was reputed to be able to write on the board in reverse, where many of us struggle to write forwards. Another skill was to be able to write with both hands simultaneously, one going left and the other to the right. His final Further Maths group were convinced that he was a spy and presented him with a spy kit for his retirement."
After he retired, Colin and his wife Jenny moved to St Albans. Leisure suited him very well, and he was a much loved member of the community at his parish church, St Michaels. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
