On Sunday, July 14th, nearly 200 guests gathered in the Headmaster's Quad on a sunny afternoon to celebrate the remarkable career of Lilla, whose 27 years at AGS have left an indelible mark on the community. The turnout was a testament to the countless lives she has touched over the years.
The afternoon began with a warm welcome from Mark Sturgeon, Headmaster. In his address, Mark highlighted the profound impact Lilla has had on the School, expressing deep gratitude for her incredible contributions. He praised her dedication, noting how integral she has been to the fabric of AGS.
“Teaching is so much more than a profession, more than a vocation.
Lilla epitomises how loyalty, commitment, passion and love, all form part of a relationship, even with a school and the people in it.
The legacy she leaves us is one that touches every member of staff, every student.
81 terms, 25,000 lessons, over 5000 students and their families.
From teaching history to leading the sixth form and caring for the most vulnerable In our care.”
Guests enjoyed delightful music throughout the event, thanks to the talented performances of Keane Liboon Paterson (Paterson 12), Thomas Harrington (Phillips 12) and Joseph Aloluwaloba (Hampden 12), their music provided a perfect backdrop for the afternoon.
Three Old Aylesburians—Daniel Fazakerley (Denson ‘02), Dom Butler (Hampden ‘05), and Denzel Asamoah (Denson ‘20)—shared heartfelt reflections on how Lilla influenced their school careers and shaped their lives beyond AGS. Their stories underscored Lila's firm but fair approach and illustrated the profound role teachers play in supporting and guiding young people.
Ellie Treherne and Gary Ramsbottom, Lilla's longtime colleagues on the Sixth Form Team, offered toasts filled with humour and fond memories. They recounted their years together and emphasised the deep impact Lilla has had on both staff and students.
A special rendition of "Unforgettable," with amended lyrics, was performed by Craig Nathan, adding a unique and touching moment to the celebration.
A lovely memory book, filled with warm reflections and beautiful messages from current and past staff and students, was presented to her during the tea. The book served as a tangible reminder of the legacy she leaves behind.
Lilla herself addressed guests, delivering an emotional thank you to her colleagues, both current and past, for their unwavering support over the years. Her heartfelt speech was a poignant reminder of the community she helped build and nurture.
